Stock – Racing Oil Pickup Tubes

Many different types of pickup tubes were used over the years. All car chassis use oil pans with the sump in the center, while trucks use pans with the sump in either the front or the rear. The pickup must be matched to the correct sump location and depth of the pan you are using. In addition, Hemi’s used a 1/2″ pipe tube while almost everything else used a 3/8″ pipe tube. It is possible to drill and tap your block out to 1/2″ diameter and use a hemi pickup for increased oil volume. Chrysler calls these an “Oil strainer with pipe.”

3/8″ internal oil pickups which are designed specifically for stroker engines. or with the larger 1/2″ threads for Hemi blocks or wedge blocks that have been drilled and tapped for the larger Hemi size pickup.

external swinging oil pickup. These mount in the bottom of virtually any oil pan, and have provisions for two -12 AN bulkhead fitting ,to secure them in place. These allow you to run either one or two -12 braided stainless lines (for either single or dual line systems) directly to the oil pump. An oil pump cover which has provisions for the external line connection is required. This setup also allows you to delete and block off the stock screw-in type internal oil pickup. This frees up lots of room in the bottom end for large stroker setups, and also has the added benefit of bypassing the restrictive factory oil feed passages drilled into the engine block. The swinging arm feature allows the pickup to “swing” along with the oil in the sump as the car accelerates and decelerates.

aluminum external static oil pickup. These mount in the bottom of virtually any oil pan, and use a -12 AN or – 16 AN bulkhead fitting to secure them in place. This allows you to run a -12/16 braided stainless line (equivalent to 3/4″/1″ diameter) directly to the oil pump. An oil pump cover which has provisions for the external line connection is required. This setup also allows you to delete and block off the stock screw-in type internal oil pickup. This frees up lots of room in the bottom end for large stroker setups, and also has the added benefit of bypassing the restrictive factory oil feed passages drilled into the engine block.

stock replacement type curved type oil pickup. Use these with most factory style passenger car oil pans that have internal baffles welded in them, as the curve in the tube is engineered to allow the pickup to avoid hitting the baffle. These will also work in applications which originally came with a straight pickup tube, even if there is no baffle, since the curve in them will not cause any problems. Remember to always check your pickup to oil pan clearance.

for use with TRUCK REAR SUMP pans. These are most likely Chrysler #4027238. The rear sump truck pan also requires a special dipstick assembly.

pickup for use with TRUCK FRONT SUMP pans. Most Motorhome and truck 413’s or 361’s will use these. These are Chrysler #1852635.
